Welcome to Behind the Brush!
Artist Statement:
Art is the doorway to a world that does not require the use of words, which can seem incomplete and meaningless in comparison. I believe that humans are created with a longing for visual representations of what we experience on the inside. When words are not enough and we cannot even begin to express our thoughts, we can still somehow find connection and a sense of completeness in images that have the ability to capture our emotions and hold our eyes. I strive to create images that viewers can connect with on multiple levels rather than just an interest in technical excellence. My art is not always pleasantly themed, but, then again, neither is life always dripping with sunshine.
My inspiration comes through a variety of different sources, both negative and positive. I do my best to recreate significant experiences in my life that have changed me, and marked me as human. Whether it was a moment of absolute failure or a moment of pure joy, I see these extreme emotions as opportunities to relate to viewers on a personal level. I love expressing a full range of human emotions in my paintings and drawings, from happiness, empathy, and serenity to anger, despair, and shame. Everyone has experienced these emotions to some degree, and it is my hope that viewers can relate to the work that I create. Oil paints are my preferred medium but I also work with acrylics, charcoal, graphite, and ceramics.
I believe that good art piece is admired for a moment, but a great art piece is remembered forever.
